Invisible Theatre

Bacteria, dead wood, green algae, glass, etc.

In the epidemic a silence grew; it grew, and hung stiff and unbearably heavy in the air. Nevertheless, there were still voices hiding in this misty silence, and I picked up and presented two of them in my sound installation Invisible Theater. Jade stones are treasured; tree branches are everywhere yet of little value. The jade sings a carol of stillness: an infant heart beats inside it; the branch whispers a lament of decay, as if bacteria have set a world ablaze. As I hope to make apparent through my art, these sounds are sounds of life — they are everywhere should we choose to listen to them.

Invisible Theater is a sound installation where each component interacts with the others. Driven by sunlight, algae release oxygen through photosynthesis, which in turn affects the growth rate of bacteria in the dead wood. Over time, the bacteria gradually decompose the wood until it completely disappears, like a slow, silent burning. The installation amplifies and extends this microscopic process through soundscapes, inviting viewers to reflect on the invisible cycles of life in nature.
