Huanzhe Hu’s installation Cyber Sculpture (2019) is a life-sustaining apparatus made with recycled computer parts. This complex bricolage ecosystem hosts shrimp, fish, plants, and invisible microbes, which are sustained by repurposed heat and cooling systems. At the same time, the organisms’ transpiration ensures the smooth running of the CPU components. Additionally, the apparatus also periodically takes photos of the critters and posts them on social media. The agenda of this prototype is not to preserve a state of stasis, but to facilitate, document, and adapt to changes that occur within its miniature biome.

What does animation through symbiosis look like? The machine is ensouled as its functions merge with its symbionts’—respiration, thermoregulation, photosynthesis, etc. In contrast to most agricultural biotechnologies (e.g. , automated farms, genetic engineering), the machine’s agenda is no longer to optimize productivity or to maintain an equilibrium. In lieu of a cybernetic system that aims to regulate nature, here is a mechanical holobiont (an organism that hosts multiple other species) that embraces change and co-evolves with the species it hosts, allowing roles to blend and new relations to emerge.







Taken together, the machine, shrimp, fish, plants, and microbes can also be considered a whole cyborg, which radically blurs the ontological boundaries between the “biological” and the “artificial.” Such a blurring is perhaps more urgent in the context of today’s ecological crises because it enables us to envision a future of animistic, affective machines that thrive on reciprocities with organic lifeforms.

胡寰哲的装置作品《赛博雕塑》(2019年)是一个由电脑、鱼类、植物和微生物构成的生命系统。电脑所产生的热量为鱼类和植物提供生存所必需的温度,水循环和植物的蒸腾提供散热以确保CPU的流畅运行。此外,装置定期拍摄鱼和植物的照片,并将其发布在社交媒体。这件混合生态系统的目标不是静态呈现,而是为了研究、促进和记录生物群落间的协同进化。

什么是活态共生?当机器作为共生体的协调者 —— 与呼吸、体温调节、光合作用融为一体时 —— 机器被赋予了灵光。在大多数农业生物技术(如自动化农场、基因工程)中,机器的主张是为人类优化生产或保持生产环境的平衡。与试图调控自然的系统控制论不同,《赛博雕塑》是一个拥抱变化的机械共生系统。它与其承载的物种协同进化,系统中的角色相互交融,延伸出新的种间关系。机器、鱼、植物和微生物也可以被认为是一个完整的赛博格,从根本上模糊了“生物”和“人工”之间的本体论界限。在当今生态危机的背景下,这种边界的模糊或许更为紧迫,因为它使我们能够想象一个人造物与有机生命体相互反馈、万物有灵的未来。
